Chapter 33
The next train to Vienna was leaving in ten minutes. I had been to the ladies' room to check on my upper lip, which was visibly swollen and stung. Still, aesthetically it wasn't as bad as I had expected. It even looked good on me. The wound on my leg was a different matter. It wasn't deep but it was ugly. I cleansed it with water and some antiseptic wipes I had in my purse and then I wrapped it in a makeshift bandage.
We had bought three tickets and Karel waited for Zdenka on the platform.
âAre you sure she's coming?â
âYes. She said so.â
Minutes passed and Zdenka didn't show up. Karel was really worried and called her several times, but Zdenka did not answer.
âCome on. Maybe she thought it over and she's not coming,â I said when I saw the train was about to leave.
Karel looked at me sadly.
The train left for Vienna at the appointed time. The landscape was sublime, the silence was absolute and Karel was crestfallen.
During the whole journey Karel kept trying to get in touch with Zdenka, but he was unsuccessful.
When we arrived in Vienna we took a taxi. Karel said he had a friend who would let us stay over. Neither of us had any luggage so we decided to stop at a department store located in the city center to buy some clothes to change into and some toiletries. Karel's phone rang. From his expression I figured it was Zdenka.
âAre you okay?â
Karel's face showed sheer relief.
âShe says she's alright,â he said when he saw me looking at him.
Karel moved away a little and continued talking for several minutes. Then he came back. His face still looked sad.
âShe's okay. She's at home with Novak. Apparently Novak called her when we left. He had found out that the story about Karlovy Vary was a lie. She left right away. I told her to be careful and not to go to my place just in case.â
âDo you think the guys who attacked us know where you live?â
âI don't know, but they obviously followed us to the palace. They've been watching us.â
âIf they think she's got anything to do with this she could be in danger,â I said worried.
âImpossible with Novak by her side,â he said with a bitter smile. âDon't worry; Novak will protect her.â
Karel's friend had a small apartment near Stephansplatz.
When Karel had called him he had replied that he wasn't in town at the moment. He was on tour and wouldn't be back for a few days. He said we could use his apartment for as long as we liked. He gave us the address of his housekeeper so she could give us a key.
The housekeeper was not very happy about letting us use the apartment in absence of its owner. However, she had no choice after speaking to Karel's friend on the phone.
The view from the living room was magnificent, but the fridge was completely empty. While I showered and dressed in new clothes, Karel went down to get some supplies.
